Through January 8, 2012 Museum De Lakenhal presents the major exhibition ‘Liberty! The Relief of Leiden 1574-2011. Historical facts, stories and artefacts relate how this historical event from the Eighty Years’ War grew to become the largest local people’s feast in The Netherlands. A special feature of this interactive family exhibition is the Standard Project (or: ‘Vaandelproject’) in which visitors can participate in and contribute to the exhibition.
By commission from Museum De Lakenhal and Universiteit Leiden renowned photographer Erwin Olaf created a historic piece, two still lifes and six portraits on the subject matter of The Relief of Leiden. The monumental historic piece will be on permanent display at Museum De Lakenhal. The other photographs are shown a the Library of Universiteit Leiden.
THE RELIEF OF LEIDEN IN THE PRESS
Already from the opening there has been extensive coverage of the exhibition in the national press with front page features in newspapers NRC and Trouw. De Standaard, NRC and NRCnext also featured the history piece by Erwin Olaf as a full page spread. Leidsch Dagblad, Trouw and Vrij Nederland published comprehensive articles on the exhibition.
On Thursday September 29, 2011 Erwin Olaf’s work was featured in an item on the NOS Journaal.
WHAT”S MORE TO EXPERIENCE IN MUSEUM DE LAKENHAL?
MUSEUM DE LAKENHAL LEIDEN
There is no place in the world like Leiden. Where would you find one city in which Rembrandt, Jan Lievens, Gerrit Dou, Jan Steen and Jan van Goyen all lived and worked in the same time frame? At Museum De Lakenhal – the only museum of art in the city of Leiden – paintings by these famous artists are, of course, on display. Museum De Lakenhal also takes you on a journey through the (in)famous and (sometimes) turbulent history of the city of Leiden. This includes major sections of the collection relating the ‘laken’ industry and many top artifacts devoted to and focussed on The Relief of Leiden of October 3, 1574. Artisinal works and applied arts are presented in a selection of tiles, furniture and silver works. Throughout the museum you will be taken on an adventure through the ages as much as you will be amazed by extraordinary works of contemporary art.
We feel a museum and the collection only come to life and gain meaning when people are able to see for themselves and allowed to be genuinely touched.
