VISIT WITH CHILDREN

Children have a frank outlook on the world and are full of imagination, also when they look at objects in the museum. Their vision and opinion can be very refreshing and often makes adults look differently too. It is not necessary to be an expert to have an opinion about art. The following tips can provide you with tools for a visit with children to Museum De Lakenhal.

TIPS FOR AN ADVENTUROUS VISIT WITH CHILDREN

DO THE TOUR FOR CHILDREN

There is a free tour for children between the age of 6 and 12 available at the information desk. The questions and assignments will make all of you look very differently at the collection. Often there is a special tour available to suit the temporary exhibition.

START WHERE YOU LIKE

Don't feel like doing the tour? Explore the museum yourself! Why go through the collection chronologically or thematically, when children are very well capable of deciding where they want to go first? But take a map, for children like finding their way on it.

TAKE YOUR TIME

Whether it is half a minute or half an hour, determine yourself how long you look at a painting or an object. It is really not nescessary to be an expert or to 'get' the artwork to enjoy it - take whatever you like!

DON'T BE TOO QUIET

It's allowed to talk in Museum De Lakenhal!

TALK ABOUT IT

Talk with (grand)children about what there is to see. Questions that might help are:

  • What is the largest, smallest, prettiest, ugliest or strangest artwork or object in this room?
  • How would the fabric of this dress have felt?
  • How long would finishing this painting have taken the artist?

SEE IT FROM THEIR PERSPECTIVE

Children look at things from a different perspective. Kneel down to experience the room like they do and be surprised by the details that strike you.

HAVE FUN WITH ART

You and your family can try the following activities in the museum.

  • Get someone in the group to pick an artwork with a person in it and try to recreate the pose or facial expression. The rest of the group can then try and spot the artwork it came from.
  • Play 'I spy with my little eye' with the objects and artworks in the room.
  • Let the child spot a figure that reminds him or her of a family member, classmate or celebrity. Ask why they think so.

TAKE A BREAK

Take a break when you need one. In the entrance hall you'll find enough places to sit down, rest and enjoy something to drink.

COME BACK

There is a lot to see in Museum De Lakenhal, you don't have to see it all in one visit. Temporary exhibitions change, so every visit brings something new. Under 18s visit the museum for free, also when fees for temporary exhibitions apply.

NO WORRIES

Museum De Lakenhal is fully equipped for your visit. We have elevators, cloakrooms and baby changing facilities at the toilets. Byggy's and strollers are allowed in the museum.
