The Lucas van Leyden Patronage wants to develop sustainable relations between De Lakenhal and philanthropical citizens who feel connected with the history and art of Leiden and with De Lakenhal in particular.
De Lakenhal has a long tradition of involvement from the private sector. The founding and opening of the museum in 1874 was initiated by citizens of Leiden. Already in 1890 the museum was extended with a new hall for paintings, thanks to a gift of mister Hartevelt. In 1921 the extensive Papevleugel was added to the museum, financed by the brothers Pape. With the Lucas van Leyden Patronage De Lakenhal wants to revive this tradition.
Since the 1950s people have spoken about the necessity of an extension and renovation of the monumental ‘Laecken-Halle’. By the end of 2009 de City of Leiden placed a substantial amount of 13,5 million euros at the museums disposal towards this goal. An additional sum is needed to realise a new exhibition space, attractive presentation rooms and high-standard furnishings. Realisation of the renovation and development is expected in the period 2013-2015.
In the period 2011-2012 the Lucas van Leyden Patronage focuses specifically on the financing of the renovation and development of De Lakenhal. Afterwards the proceeds of the Patronage will go towards furnishing, program and special projects of the museum.
Namesake Lucas van Leyden
The Patronage was named after the 16th-century painter and graphic artist Lucas van Leyden (ca. 1494-1533) from Leiden. Lucas was the first to bring the art of the Renaissance to the Northern Netherlands. With his talent, broad interests and good international contacts (he was a good friend of Albrecht Dürer for example) he was already recognised as one of the greatest artists of the time during his own lifetime. The triptych ‘Last Judgement’ by Lucas van Leyden is without a doubt the most loved work in De Lakenhal.

Gift circles
The Lucas van Leyden Patronage has three gift circles, each with their own privileges: drapers, syndics and governors. Members of the patronage can count on personal attention of the board, management and staff. De Lakenhal gives patronage members the opportunity to meet each other at special receptions, such as the yearly Patronage diner. The exclusive patronage program is anchored in the history, program and collection of De Lakenhal. A unique feature is that members of the patronage receive a personal key to De Lakenhal, which can be silvered once every five years.
Gifts from 10.000 euro per five years
In the 16th and 17th century the linen from Leiden was world famous for its colour and quality. Drapers were the distinguished citizens who played an important role in the council and trade of the city. A draper was involved in the production and sale of linen fabrics. His activities bridged the old craft industry and the later industrial production. Drapers were important contributors to the economic development of Leiden.

Gifts from 25.000 euro per five years
Syndics were the most important sampling officials of the linen from Leiden. They checked the colour of the fabrics, in comparison with certified samples: ‘stalen’. This was of great importance, because the high-quality glossy colours like blue, violet and crimson red made the linen fabrics famous all over the world. Syndics were unpaid but becoming a syndic was a mark of honour and came with a lot of influence. In de ‘Laecken-Halle’ the authentic syndics room is still visible for the audience.

Gifts from 50.000 euro per five years
Governors were the leaders of the linen industry, as members of the board. They supervised the quality in a very strict manner.
Approved shipments were given a lead quality mark, the ‘lakenloodje’ (linen lead). The famous Leiden linen was traded all over the world. This is why linen leads from Leiden were found in every continent. New governors were recruited among notables and big entrepreneurs of the city of Leiden. In de ‘Laecken-Halle’ the governors room with the original paintings is still visible for the audience.

ANBI
The Lucas van Leyden Patronage is classified by the tax authorities as an Institution for the Common Good (ANBI). This means gifts can be subtracted from the income- and partnership taxes. The tax benefits can get up to 52% of the donated amount. The patronage is happy to assist you in drawing up a notarial act by BMS Network Notaries. The patronage will gladly take care of the costs.
