Artists' dinner

8 september 2015

The Argentinian-English artist duo Lucy and Jorge Orta, who are reknowned throughout the world for the development of installations that poetically tackle contemporary social and ecological problems, have built a large water purification plant as their contribution to Global Imaginations. This impressive purifying system took water from Leiden’s Zijlsingel and transformed it into drinkable water. The duo also hosted a dinner entitled 70 x 7 The Meal XXXVIII, which also focused on the themes of water and global citizenship. The dinner also featured special plates and table cloths depicting these themes, which have also been designed by the artistic duo. Dinner guests were asked to discuss concrete solutions for the ‘burning issues’ that came forth from the conference held the previous day.

Lucy Orta opened the dinner, which features a hundred guests that include scientists and other Dutch professionals specializing in water issues, with a speech. A number of ‘Leidenaars’, including water specialists and highly interested individuals, were also invited, as well as thirty high school students participating in the conference.
