At Home in Nature

Friday 11 April from 19:00 till 22:00

Suddenly there was a dire reappraisal of the garden as we all sat indoors in covid time. The interest in having more greenery around you hasn't gone away. Think façade gardens, waiting lists for allotments, insect-friendly gardens, or small vegetable gardens on the balcony. In the exhibition Floris Verster - At Home in Nature artists explore this careless nature. For Floris Verster, his own garden was an important source of inspiration. He painted the trees, flowers and plants from his garden. Or think of famous artists like Monet or filmmaker Derek Jarman with their own gardens from which they drew their inspiration.

In this Lakenhal Late we dive deeper into the garden - as a source of inspiration for artists, and into the meaning of the garden. Expect an evening of artist talks, workshop and performance. Including Annelies Dijkman, Esther Hoogendijk, Seet van Hout, Bonne Reijn and Lou Lou van Staaveren.

Maurits de Bruijn reads from Modern Nature from Derek Jarman

From 21:00 till 21:15 in the exhibition

Installation: Komorebi

From 19:00 till 21:45 on the Courtyard

Under the name Komorebi, artists Matteo Marangoni and Dieter Vandoren developed a swarm of artificial creatures that make music in response to the sun, clouds and shadows of plants moving in the wind. Komorebi in Japanese means "sunlight shining through trees". The work suggests that “life” is not an exceptional property of organic life forms, but also a property of complex systems beyond biological life as we understand it. For this Lakenhal Late, the creatures enter into a relationship with Annelies Dijkman's work Blomhof. Blomhof is part of the exhibition Floris Verster - At Home in Nature. Be immersed in this sensory experience on the Courtyard.

The first version of Komorebi was developed for the Vlieland festival Into The Great Wide Open 2020.
