Artist Vera van de Seyp has created a contemporary design for a new Leiden Blanket, commissioned by Museum De Lakenhal and Leiden Blanket Foundation/Leidens Weaver corporation. Van de Seyp immersed herself in Leiden's blanket-making history, which dates back to the sixteenth century, and selected ten sites of former blanket factories on which to base her design. She then used a computer code to convert these factories' names into abstract patterns. The result is a series of ten different blankets woven in Dutch wool yarn and a colour palette based on old blanket patterns. The blankets are made in the Stichting Leidse Deken workshop on a unique peddle-powered loom belonging to the Leiden Weaver's House. The blankets are on sale at the Leidse Dekenshop and in the museum shop. Vera van de Seyp (Leiden,1993) is a graphic designer and creative coder. She lives in New York and works as a designer and teacher.
