Deze kist werd gebruikt voor het opbergen van geld en belangrijke documenten. Tot de stadhuisbrand van 1929 stond de kist in het Leidse Stadhuis. Daarna is hij overgedragen aan Museum De Lakenhal. In 1949 werd de kist ‘na restauratie wederom naar het stadhuis overgebracht ten behoeve van de kamer van de Wethouder van Financiën’.
