Public domain is a term used to indicate that works are no longer protected by copyright and related rights. In the EU, this is the case when the maker has been deceased for at least 70 years. In that case, there is no rightful claimant and there is no permission needed to use the work.

Tekening in Oost-Indische inkt gemaakt met penseel. Met afbeelding van een hoofd, weggedoken in een hele hoge kraag. Op de achterzijde in potlood 19, de datum en plaats. In inkt het signatuur en met blauwe pen "in zichzelf", boven het woordje in staat in potlood "("uit")". Onder aan het blad de tekst: ("Ik ben uitgegaan, om te proberen in te gaan. Maar hier zit ik. En kijk naar buiten.") Met een schets van de uitgewerkte tekening.
