CHOOSE A THEME GUIDED TOUR

The Museum De Lakenhal collection is centred around various core themes. If you would like to get more in-depth information during your group tour, Museum De Lakenhal has organised theme-based tours for group visits.

Leiden as the cradle of Dutch painting

Would you like to discover what makes Leiden the cradle of Dutch painting? This guided tour focuses on exhibition highlights of the seventeenth century, including masterpieces of Leiden artists like Rembrandt van Rijn, Jan Steen, Gerrit Dou and Jan van Goyen.

Seven centuries of Leiden Cloth

Museum De Lakenhal takes its name from the prosperous seventeenth-century cloth industry (‘laken’ means ‘cloth’ in Dutch). In the historic ‘Laecken-Halle’, the fabric was inspected before being shipped all over the world. Learn all about how this unique textile industry has developed over the centuries during the Seven Centuries of Leiden Cloth guided tour.

The Siege and Relief of Leiden

For the inhabitants of Leiden, 3 October is a special day. It is a day that is celebrated by young and old in the city from early morning to late at night to commemorate the day on which Leiden was freed from the Spanish siege in 1574. Museum De Lakenhal possesses a number of exceptional items, which together tell the story of this extraordinary period in Dutch history.

Modern Life

At the beginning of the 19th century, a thriving artist community flourished in Leiden. Artists like Floris Verster, Menso Kamerlingh Onnes and H.P. Bremmer were in direct contact with Jan Toorop and Johan Thorn Prikker. In 1917, Theo van Doesburg established De Stijl magazine in Leiden, which proved to be a revolutionary leap forward towards the modern period. These and other aspects are all covered in the Modern Life guided tour.
