Free museum visit on 3 October

You can visit Museum De Lakenhal for free every year on 3 October to witnes the history of the Leidens Siege and Relief.

Leiden loves history and Leiden people are proud of their own city's past. It has therefore been a long-standing tradition for many Leiden citizens to visit Museum De Lakenhal on 3 October to view the tangible memories of Leiden's Siege and Relief. And fortunately, this will also be possible in 2023! Come and admire - in between all the festivities in the city - such masterpieces as The Self-Sacrifice of Mayor Van der Werff by Matthijs van Bree, the contemporary interpretation by Erwin Olaf, the hutspot kettle, the pigeon notes, the emergency coins and the Lanckaert carpet.

As part of the city's traditional celebrations - the fair, the parade, eating herring and white bread and, of course, hotchpotch - we will open the museum free of charge from 10am to 1pm. An NGT tour guide will be present all that morning to tell you more about this important episode of Dutch history. And families with children from 6 years onwards can visit our Open Atelier all morning for a walk-in workshop in which you will create your own work of art using the familiar stew ingredients!

Free entrance and no ticket or reservation required (please note that parking in the vicinity of the museum is limited due to the 3 October Fair).
