Leiden Cloth

Cloth (noun, plural cloths) (klawth z, kloth z, klawths, kloths) : a fabric formed by weaving, felting, etc., from wool.

Life in Leiden has revolved around the production of woollen cloth for the past seven centuries – from the 13th all the way up to 20th century. Museum De Lakenhal, which is the foremost museum on the city’s artistry and history, is now breathing new life into Leiden’s famous cloth.

NEW LEIDEN CLOTH

In the period up to 2017, the Museum will commission five designers to develop brand-new woollen fabrics that will once again carry the old hallmark of ‘Leiden Cloth’. Christie van der Haak was the first artist to be commissioned to design a New Leiden Cloth. She let herself be inspired by the museum’s collection of fabric samples, which includes many colourful, exotic patterns.

Open Call | De opdracht

Together with The Campaign For Wool, Museum De Lakenhal opened up an Open Call for the second design in the series New Leiden Cloth.

The winner is the design which best succeeds in connecting to the museum's identity. Just like the Cloth fabrics of the pas, the fabric will have to be of the highest quality concerning material, technique and artistic expression. Also, the fabric must consist of a minimum of 80% wool. In their designs, artists are invited to develop a modern interpretation of those fabrics that matches the identity of Museum De Lakenhal: classical and stylish, but at the same time contemporary and daring. Professional artists and designers up to the age of 35 are invited to apply.
